AS YOU BEGIN

Most books on prayer are about the theory of prayer. This book is different because you use it as you pray! Organized solely upon the Scriptures, it guides you to pray systematically and comprehensively for the advancement of God’s Kingdom in your life and in the world. In just 15 to 20 minutes a day, you will be led by the Lord through His Words in praise, confession, petition, and intercession. You will be enabled to pray faithfully for yourself, your loved ones, other believers, your church, missionaries, the lost, and all the nations of the world.

This daily prayer book also includes pages on which to journal your personal praise to God, to record personal prayers and answers to prayer, and to list the names of believers and unbelievers. It provides an opportunity to be convicted of sin by reading and submitting to the commandments of God and a place to journal your own personal confession of sin. In addition, it teaches you how to intercede for the sins of your loved ones, for the Church at Large, and for your local fellowship, enabling you to participate in your role as a priest on behalf of the Body of Christ.

To continue our mission to advance Christ’s Kingdom in the world, it provides maps of all the nations of the world plus graphs that tell their main religious affiliations. A list is also provided of all the Christian denominations in America of five thousand or more. These unique elements give you the opportunity to pray for the renewal of Christians in America and around the world, the salvation of the lost worldwide, and for persecuted believers in fifty-seven nations.

PRAYING FOR HIS KINGDOM

The purpose of this book is to enable you to partner with our Lord in establishing His Kingdom on earth as it is in heaven as the Lord’s prayer commands us to do, “Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done.” Christ came to establish a Kingdom on earth of those people, who by His grace, would desire and be able to obey His commands. His Kingdom exists in each of us individually when we trust in Him as Savior and Lord, and in the Church as a whole as we walk together in that same loving and faithful obedience.

When we make His Kingdom the purpose of our lives and live to please Him, the Scripture promises that we can ask God in prayer to accomplish His Kingdom purposes and He will do it! One of the most wonderful promises for answered prayer is 1 John 5:14-15: “Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God and receive from Him anything we ask, because we obey His commands and do what pleases Him.” Notice that this verse promises that we can ask “anything” if we are living to please God and obeying his commands! This book will enable the “anything” you ask for to be His glory and His Kingdom.

Two other promises of answered prayer will give you the same confidence that when you live to seek His Kingdom that God will give you whatever you ask are: “Until now you have not asked for anything in My name. Ask and you will receive and your joy will be complete.” (John 16:24) “And I will do whatever you ask for in My name, so the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask Me for anything in My name, and I will do it.” (John 14: 13-14) This book will enable you to focus your prayers upon the purpose of your life enabling you to satisfy this condition for answered prayer.

PRAYING IN THE WORD OF GOD

The reason this book is based upon the Word of God is that the Word does the following: sets us apart from sin ( John 17:17), is living and active, penetrates to dividing the soul and the spirit, and judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart (Heb. 4:12), is God-breathed and useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness (2 Tim. 3:16), will never pass away (Matt. 24:35), never returns empty (Isa. 55:11), and is authored by the Holy Spirit (2 Pe. 1:21). The Scriptures are inerrant and infallible, the only dependable guide for all of life and godliness—and that includes one’s prayer life.

From the beginning to the end of the Bible, God testifies to the primacy of prayer in the life of His people and how He is the God who both inspires and answers prayer.

The Scriptures reveal His will, purposes, and plans and how prayer accomplishes both.

1 John 5:14-15 promises us that when we find God’s will in the Scripture that we can ask Him to accomplish it and He will: “This is the confidence in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of Him.” This book will enable you to know for certain what God’s will is and give you confidence to pray for it to be done.

The Scriptures also reveal God’s commands, conditions, and promises concerning prayer. John 15:7 specifically connects Christ’s Words remaining in us with answered prayer: “If you remain in Me and My words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given to you.” This book will enable you to meet this condition for answered prayer. As you pray in the Word of God, He will transform your heart and mind, enabling you to become a person with a heart like His whose prayers are answered.

Another condition for answered prayer is faith. Jesus said, “If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.” (Matt. 21:22) Romans 10:17 reveals that faith is formed in us through the Word of God, “Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the Word of Christ.” As you pray in the Word of God, the Holy Spirit will cause faith in His Words to grow in your heart and mind enabling you to meet this condition of answered prayer.

The Scriptures also say that only the prayers of the righteous are heard, “The Lord is far from the wicked but he hears the prayer of the righteous.” (Pro. 15:29) “We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly man who does His will.” (John 9:31) It is the Word, through the ministry of the Holy Spirit, which sets us apart from sin so that we might walk in righteousness in order to fulfill this condition for answered prayer.

Jesus prayed, “Sanctify them by the truth; your Word is truth.” The author of Hebrews tells us what the Word does to sanctify us from sin: “For the Word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” (Heb. 4:12)

As you use this book in prayer, you will discover that the Word of God is living and active in your life, separating you from sin and enabling you to walk in righteousness and to claim His promises to the righteous concerning answered prayer.

HOW USING THIS BOOK CAN AFFECT YOUR LIFE

You will be brought closer to the Lord Jesus Christ as your mind is renewed through Scriptural prayers by His Word and as you become His prayer partner in praying for the Church and for the lost. The focus of your prayers will shift from yourself to God, from your needs to His will, from your glory to His glory, from the narrow circle of your family and friends to His Church and the world He wants to impact with the gospel. You will develop confidence in prayer and your faith will grow as your prayers are answered. You will be enabled to pray faithfully for yourself, your loved ones, other believers, your church, the lost, missionaries, our nation, and all the nations of the world. You will discover that, although you may never be a missionary to another nation, you are a missionary in prayer for the whole world.

There is no greater ministry than prayer! There is no greater means given to us from God than prayer to impact this world for Christ! You may speak to a thousand people in your lifetime but you can pray for millions.

It is entirely possible that you will stand one day before the Lord, our precious Savior, and hear Him say, “Turn around. See what your prayers have accomplished! Well done my good and faithful servant!” And behind you will be thousands and thousands of people, perhaps millions, out of every tribe, language, people, and nation, who are in the Kingdom of God because you prayed.

PRACTICAL ENCOURAGEMENT

Only the Bible is inerrant and infallible! You need not agree with every application of every verse to use this book. Feel free to disregard whatever conflicts with your personal belief. Use this book according to your conscience and the leading of the Holy Spirit. It is my sincerest hope and prayer that you will make this book work for you as you seek to live for Him. While this book was written with the sincerest of intentions— to glorify Christ, to be faithful to His Words and to His will, and to advance His Kingdom—it is only useful if you make it your own. So “edit” it for your best use!

In terms of how to use it in your life, I would encourage you to be gentle with yourself! If you are not used to praying for more than a few minutes at a time, don’t try to use it at first for longer than about fifteen minutes. If you go longer than that, you may become discouraged and not use it again. So set your timer and end after fifteen minutes! Forming a habit of daily prayer often takes years. Do not become discouraged! If you will persist, even if you fail for a long time, you will eventually succeed.

You are the only one who can decide when to use the book. It is clear from the Scripture and our own experience, that praying first thing in the morning is probably best. I certainly recommend it because “ His mercies are new every morning” and because we all know how difficult it is to pray a session of prayer once the busyness of the day takes over. Yet some of you are simply unable to pray in the morning. Pick another time and make it a priority; God is awake twenty-four hours a day!

While using it everyday is best, certainly this is a book that can be used in many other ways—several times a week, once a week, for a two hour session once a month, etc.

While it was written primarily for use in personal devotions, it is also works well in praying with your spouse, with older children, in a small group, in a Bible study, in mid-week prayer meetings, and during Sunday morning services. It is for all ages from 16 on up, men and women, lay people, pastors, teachers, missionaries, leaders in the church, brand new Christians and mature believers, and Christians of all denominations who believe in the Word of God.

May this book revolutionize your prayer life, drawing you closer to the Lord Jesus Christ and enabling you to become His prayer partner for His Kingdom’s sake!
