You shall have no other gods before me...For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God. -- Exodus 20:3,5
We have desires in our hearts that are core to who and what we are; they are almost mythic in their meaning, waking in us something transcendent and eternal. But we can be mistaken about how those desires will be lived out. The way in which God fulfills a desire may be different from what first awakened it. -- John Eldredge, Wild at Heart
Mia had a special gift of music. When she sand a church solo at four years of age, all the church members began calling her their "little star." By the time she reached college, she was touring up and down the West Coast, and she spent a good part of her twenties in Hollywood, following dead-end leads. To make ends meet, she began a career teaching voice and piano lessons. She slowly began to wonder if that was all she would ever do with her gift of music.
Mia eventually got married and settled into life with children and a job completely unrelated to music. She still had a genuine desire and love for music, and though she enjoyed singing in the church choir, part of her heart -- as difficult as it was to admit -- wanted to prove her critics wrong. She wanted them to see that she did have the makings of a star. Now approaching her mid-thirties, time seemed to be running out. At times she wondered if it had all been in vain. God, why have You given me this dream, this gift, this desire and not let me fulfill it? I don't feel as though I am living for what I was created to do. Is there something more? Is this it?
We all have expectations for our lives. Each of us harbors dreams and hopes in our hearts that we hope will define our lives. Dreams and hopes offer us a sense of purpose and meaning.
1. What dreams have you held in your heart? To which dreams do you still hold?
2. How have your dreams changed over the years? What has caused them to change?
Can you relate to Mia's confusion? Perhaps the circumstances of your life don't seem to fit with your God-given gifts or dreams. Or maybe all of your dreams have come true, and yet you still find yourself wondering, Is this it? We easily fall into thinking that once we accomplish certain hopes and dreams, we will finally feel fulfilled.
Purpose is "something set up as an object or end to be attained: intention." Let's see what the Bible has to say about God's intentions for our lives and compare them with our own.
