One day my husband and I were strolling the streets of New York City, when a billboard caught my eye. It read, “More people will do a double take when they see a smile than when they see a brand-new luxury automobile roll off the showroom floor…so SMILE!”
The thought intrigued me, so I decided to give it a try. I walked arm in arm with my husband, smiling broadly all the way, and you know what? It was true! People did take a second look. In fact, many even smiled back. It was great! I realized then and there that a smile is the best—not to mention the most inexpensive—way to improve your looks on the outside while at the same time making you feel better on the inside. A smile is a blessing for both the one who gives and the one who receives it.
In the book of Numbers, God smiled on the people of Israel and gave them His blessing of peace as they traveled in the wilderness. His smile was a source of support. Could your smile likewise be a source of encouragement, peace, or comfort to someone today? Go ahead—give it a try. Smile, and a grin just might be given back to you!
Go out into the world uncorrupted, a breath of fresh air in this squalid and polluted society. Provide people with a glimpse of good living and of the living God. Carry the light-giving Message into the night. — Philippians 2:15
May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord show you his favor and give you his peace. —Numbers 6:25-26 nlt
