Extreme Grandparenting: The Ride of Your Life from Tyndale House was written by the co-founders of Family Matters, husband and wife team Dr. Tim and Marcy Kimmel, in conjunction with Focus on the Family.
The theme of the book that came through to me, is that grandparents must turn away from the world’s cultural idea of seniors living solely for their own happiness, comfort, and benefit. They must answer the calling of God to serve Him in the role of grandparents for the sake of future generations.
The Kimmels teach four basic roles that the grandparent should play in their grandchildren’s lives: giving and being a blessing; carrying the torch of hope in Christ; leaving a legacy of faith; and setting a standard of righteousness. These four roles are taught along with practical suggestions for implementing them.
Grandparents face many new problems in these changing times and often need godly advice. Some of those issues touched on in this book are: dealing with divorce and remarriage; taking in adopted grands and step-grands; raising grandchildren; spoiling grandkids; babysitting; long-distance grandparenting; and how to intervene without interfering. Each chapter concludes with study and discussion questions along with a prayer, making the book a good choice for group study.
Being a grandmother myself, I found value in the advice offered in this book. If anything, the book is perhaps overwritten, that is, attempting to cover too wide a range of grandparenting issues. Yet, the reader can easily find thoughtful counsel for the issues he does face. Think of this as a reference book for putting the grand back into grandparenting. – Elece Hollis, Christian Book Previews.com
