Dug Down Deep

by Joshua Harris

Review  |   Author Bio  |  Read an Excerpt

Joshua Harris calls Christians to orthodoxy in Dug Down Deep, a field guide for planting deep roots of faith. Based on the parable of the wise and foolish builders in Luke 6, Harris argues that doctrine, shunned by many as restrictive and intimidating, is the foundation that the church needs in order to weather the gales of the ever-increasing criticism and scrutiny it faces. He constructs a rational case, which he fortifies with humorous stories from his life.

In the opening chapters, Harris confronts the entertainment-oriented church, the congregations who measure success by attendance, and the pastors who preach nothing but the flavor of the day. He establishes the need for orthodoxy immediately afterward, citing Jesus’ question in Luke 6:46: “Why do you call Me Lord but don’t do what I say?” In order to do what Jesus commands, one must know what He commands.

The remainder of the book deals with specific issues, such as Jesus’ personhood, the Trinity, and the nature of sanctification. In doing so, Harris tells story after story from his life, explaining how he came to understand each idea. He is no puppet in a pulpit; he has plumbed the depths of the foundational beliefs of Christianity and examined their validity.

Extremely persuasive, Dug Down Deep presents well-thought reasons for why Christians should embrace orthodoxy and challenges readers to come to grips with concepts that have frustrated many. Some readers may be put off by Harris’s occasional critiques of the charismatic church, which are at times very blunt. All in all, it will force believers to evaluate what is supporting their faith—is it stone or sand—and will answer many tough questions for those curious about Christianity. – Mark T. Glenchur,
