Joyful Living: A Personal Study of Philippians

by Rhonda Kelley

Review  |   Author Bio  |  Read an Excerpt

In Rhonda H. Kelley’s Joyful Living, the book of Philippians is thoroughly analyzed and adapted to fit the personal needs of readers. With each chapter, or lesson, she focuses on different events and blessings to rejoice in, and she tells how to do so with a joyful heart and optimistic outlook. Each page is full of wisdom and personal testimonies of trials and joy, making the study relevant to contemporary readers who are facing unemployment, illness, family breakups, or career setbacks.

Kelley does a great job involving the readers with the lessons. Instead of just taking points specifically from Philippians, she uses important lessons from the entire Bible, making it a very vigorous and encompassing study. With spaces between paragraphs for the readers to include their own thoughts, readers are able to interact with the study by answering personal questions Kelley asks. Each lesson ends with “Your Joyful Journey,” wherein each reader is able to describe how the lesson affects him or her, and how he or she can carry that lesson on a day to day basis.

The book presents 12 nourishing lessons about endurance, faith, trust, focus, and obedience. I recommend this to anyone who wants to dive into a deeper study of the book of Philippians, and learn more of what Paul really meant by, “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” (Philippians 4:4, NIV). This book also includes great tips for leading a small group study through Philippians. – Katie Schlemmer,
