In his book, Jesus and Muhammad: Profound Differences and Surprising Similarities, Dr. Mark Gabriel compares and contrasts the teachings and actions of Jesus and Muhammad. There are more than two billion professed Christians and 1.3 billion followers of Islam in the world. Increasingly, they are interacting both globally and locally, yet most followers of each religion have only a limited understanding of the beliefs of the other. In this book, Dr. Gabriel takes us to the source, examining the words and actions of Jesus and Muhammad, rather than the actions of the followers. He states, “Remember, you cannot understand Christianity by what Christians do, nor can you understand Islam by what Muslims do. You have to go to the original sources.”
The book begins with Gabriel’s own story of growing up a devout Muslim. He received his doctorate in Islamic History and Culture from the prestigious Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt, and he also lectured there. The steps that led to his departure from Islam are shocking and read like the pages of a thriller. Dr. Gabriel then begins to compare and contrast the lives of Jesus and Muhammad, using the Quran, Hadith, Islamic history, and the Bible as his sources. As a former Muslim scholar who became a Christian and received a doctorate in Christian education, Dr. Gabriel is especially qualified for this work.
The author takes us through the lives of these two teachers, even noting some surprising similarities along with the differences. He then examines their messages and teachings on topics including war, love, prayer, the treatment of women, and advice on daily living. This is where the contrasts are most evident. For example, Jesus teaches the parable of the Good Samaritan and emphasizes loving everyone whether or not they share beliefs. Surah 60:1 of the Quran states, “Take not My enemies and your enemies as friends, showing affection toward them.” The author states, “After jihad began, Muhammad also called Muslims to participate in holy war against unbelievers, killing them if necessary in order to make them submit to Islam.”
Dr. Gabriel writes in his Epilogue, “Some will complain that I am trying to make Muslims look bad. That is not my intention. I know that most Muslims are wonderful, kind, generous people who want to live at peace with the world. I came out of the Muslim culture, and I still love the Muslim people.” This book is not about examining the actions of the followers of each religion, but rather about the philosophies of the founders. In that respect the author does a wonderful job, with literally hundreds of excerpts and examples. For those readers with a voracious curiosity about the two religions, the many examples will be welcome. For those with a more casual interest, the material might become a bit overwhelming. The chapters about Dr. Gabriel’s personal journey are gripping and offer insight into the strict nature of the Muslim world. For anyone, Christian or otherwise, who seeks to understand what sets Christianity apart from Islam, this is an excellent book. – Paul Camp, Christian Book Previews.com
