Review:
In Giving Your Child the Excellence Edge, Vicki Caruana lists ten traits that will help children achieve success: leadership, producing quality, creativity, cooperation, independent learning, critical thinking, managing information, managing time, confidence, efficiency, and the ability to self-assess.
She breaks each trait into its constituent skills and gives practical strategies for training children. Each chapter ends with a section encouraging parental self-evaluation and practical ideas for encouraging the skills in the home, school, and workplace. She also suggests a family activity for each trait.
Caruana writes in a straightforward, pleasant style with numerous anecdotes in this Focus on the Family book. Known as "America's Teacher," she specializes in books on education.
This book would be useful for parents, homeschooling parents, and teachers for reading through once, for working on individual traits, or for reference book to evaluate how well your children are progressing. It is well-organized and well-written. Including a bibliography of books and organizations that she cites, as well as web site addresses, would improve the usefulness of this book. -- Debbie W.
