Review:
Discovering God’s Will For Your Life by Ray Pritchard is an updated revision of his 1995 book, The Road Best Traveled. It is the result of a sermon series that he preached in the church he pastors, Calvary Memorial Church in Oak Park, Illinois.
Pritchard’s major premise, set forth in the Introduction and in the final sentence of the book, is that if one is truly willing to do God’s will, he will do it. The intervening six chapters (only 125 pages) lead the reader through Scriptural examples and principles to illustrate that point. There are discussion questions at the end of each chapter, and most chapters employ a listing technique: Four myths about God’s guidance; Four lessons on how God guides His people; etc. There is an interesting chapter on “putting out fleeces,” and a discussion of dreams, visions and supernatural signs.
As I started to read the book I found myself wishing that Pritchard had used more direct Scripture references to make his points, rather than using texts to extrapolate principles. This was remedied somewhat as the book progressed. There have been a multitude of books on this topic written through the years, but I confess this is only the third of its kind that I have read. John MacArthur’s and Garry Friesen’s works in the 1970’s and ‘80’s were the instruments God used to shape my thinking on this issue, and I think that He will use this book by Ray Pritchard to train a new generation of believers. – Pam Glass, Christian Book Previews.com
Book Jacket:
Which college should I attend?
Am I ready to get married?
How do I know if this person is “the one”?
My company is moving to another state. Do I move, or quit my job?
At every stage of our lives, we face potentially life-altering decisions. Large and small, every decision has consequences. But we can take comfort in knowing that God has a plan for our lives.
You’re thinking, Good, God has a plan for me—but how can I know it?
In this book, Pastor Ray Pritchard offers practical lessons on making God-led decisions when you find yourself at a crossroads. You’ll read biblical accounts of men and women who followed God’s lead—and how it changed the course of their lives, even the course of history. You’ll also find personal anecdotes from the author that will give you insight into how the Lord can lead you in your life. At the end of each chapter you’ll find questions that can be used for personal reflection or group study.
Rather than trying to lay out a step-by-step plan for discovering God’s will for your life, Pastor Ray teaches us that knowing God’s will is really about knowing God, and that anyone who wants to get to know Him, can.
