Walking in Courage: Stories of Virtue's Forest

by Tanya Shock

Review  |   Author Bio  |  Read an Excerpt

How brave can one little mouse be when a guinea pig bully waylays him on the way to school? Walking in Courage shows what bravery is really made of. Happy, looking-for-a-friend Charlie Mouse doesn’t know what to do or how to act when he winds up in a mud puddle minus his lunch. He didn’t know such horrible things could happen! And then a skunk comes along. Oh, dear! But this is a kind, grandpa skunk who knows just how to aid little students like Charlie. This experience helps Charlie to show fellow-student Angie Skunk how to handle bullies. Together they manage to teach that guinea pig – well, you’ll just have to read the story to find out the lesson they help him learn.

Walking in Courage, with its full-page, action-filled illustrations, and interest-catching storyline is a good conversation starter about bullying. Preschool and elementary-age children will be drawn in by the reality of the story and delight in the animal characters. With a growing problem of bullying facing our children, this book will be useful for any group dealing with children. With an apropos Scripture as a preface, and references to both prayer and standards based in the Bible, Walking in Courage is especially useful for home-schoolers and church children’s units. Capable readers, second grade and upward, will happily read this story for themselves. The pictures and storyline work hand-in-glove helping younger students “read” the story to each other. – Donna Eggett,
