The best word to describe the children's picture book Let's Explore God's World, written and illustrated by Debby Anderson, is "diversity." The book is filled with children of all races, colors, sizes, and nationalities. Both genders get equal attention, and children who are physically challenged are shown in positive situations. Additionally, all types of terrain and environments are profiled, from deserts to high mountains and from local parks to neighborhood woods. Furthermore, numerous varieties of domesticated and wild animals are featured, including raccoons, squirrels, eagles, wolves, squids, and seahorses. And to top even that, there is a vast array of vegetation, ranging from giant sunflowers and wild strawberry plants to tall oaks and fat orange pumpkins. The author's point is to show the incredible breadth of God's creative nature, and Anderson does that well.
Each passage in the book that explains the tasty vegetables of a personal garden or the amazing variety of colors amidst butterflies is given a set of biblical references. Thus, the book can be read as a story, or each set of pages can be used as an individual Bible study for youngsters. Additionally, the author has inserted little "teaching balloons" to encourage children to show appreciation for God's planet, including lessons on the importance of recycling, the necessity of planting new plants once current ones are harvested, and the need to treat animals kindly.
This is a wonderful book that features theology, ecology, geography, and sociology, and all on a level that 3- to 6-year-olds can enjoy. – Dr. Dennis E. Hensley, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com
