Wendell C. Hawley’s pastoral prayers, collected for his book A Pastor Prays for His People, records a pastor’s deep-felt love for his congregation. Encouraged by his parishioners to publish his weekly pastoral prayers, this volume preserves those petitions, intercessions, and exaltations.
In his foreword, Hawley explains that he has not always felt at ease with formal, written prayers. As his career and faith matured, however, he found more and more comfort and encouragement from prayers of old, and began delighting in the “richness and depth” of prayer, and especially those prayers preserved in the Puritan tradition.
The collection is divided by months, and some prayers reflect holidays or special occasions on the church calendar. Some prayers reach out to God for strength in the midst of trials; others lift praise to God for his loving-kindness. All lift the reader’s hearts to the all-loving, all-knowing, all-capable God. Prayer Number Forty-One implores, “God’s bank account is more than sufficient to meet our every situation, for he is able to do exceedingly abundantly, surpassing above all that we can ask or think” (Ephesians 3:20).
Different than a series of devotions, and not a coffee-table collection of poems, Wendell C. Hawley’s collection of prayers is a wonderful resource for those times when we just don’t know how to pray for our own or a loved one’s situation, or for those times when our words just don’t seem adequate to express our thoughts and feelings. Every prayer in this collection reflects the pastor’s deep love for his congregation, and his certainty of God’s love, as well. Recommended for anyone who needs or wants to supplement his or her prayer life with one pastor’s best prayers, as written for his people. – Dr. Jan Reber, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com
