Prayer Partners With God
How many of us arrive for Sunday service just a moment before it begins, so that we can avoid the designated prayer hour? How many of us sit uncomfortably in a prayer circle with many requests in our heart, yet we utter not a word out loud? How many of us say off-handedly, "I'll pray for you," as a way to comfort or encourage others, but we never do? How many of us pray inwardly-focused prayers rather than words of praise to God? Well…I'm one such person. (Do I see your hand up, too?)
In Praying in the Word of God: Advancing Christ's Kingdom, Kathleen G. Grant explains not only the importance of prayer, but also the methods one should use in order to pray according to God's will. She is insistent about the urgent need for this personal time with the Lord. God calls us to pray, and Grant shows us how, through use of the scriptures during prayer, we can be drawn closer to the Lord.
The more time we spend in scripture, the more intimately we will know the Savior. The more often we read the Word, the more comfortable we will become in using it. The more we pray through scripture, the more we will pray in the will of God. To aid us in our search for applicable scripture verses, references are not only readily accessible throughout the book, but are also followed by a short prayer to draw readers into a deeper understanding of the text. Grant, along with her husband, has found a way of teaching prayer techniques that people from all walks of life can benefit from. This method has been taught in 19 different denominations all across the United States.
The main emphasis throughout all of Grant's teaching is how many aspects of our lives prayer affects, and how many people are changed by it. As part of her introduction, she states, "The focus of your prayers will shift from yourself to God, from your needs to His will, from your glory to His glory, from the narrow circle of your family and friends to His church and the world He wants us to impact with the gospel." As we use her method of praise, confession, and prayer, our hearts will open to unknown needs within ourselves and a passion for the broken spirits of others around the world.
This book offers a gift to those not familiar with scripture, those not comfortable with prayer, or those searching for the time to pray effectively. It provides us with a time-efficient system of prayer to get the most out of our time with God, without losing the meaning. Each part of Grant's program is explained with clarity and easy-to-follow directions. She makes it personal by allowing room for our own thoughts, objectives, and concerns. She also brings the world to our doorstep. She not only shows us how to pray for other nations, she also produces a picture of those nations through the use of maps and charts.
I now find myself in an unusual place as a result of reading this book. I can no longer use the excuse, "I don't know how to pray," or "There is not enough time to pray." I have been shown how to pray and that it takes very little time. I guess I will be getting up a bit earlier next Sunday. Grant gives an illustration of one day standing before the Lord. She says, "And behind you will be thousands of people, perhaps millions, out of every tribe, language, people, and nation, who are in the Kingdom of God because you prayed." She has given us a reason to pray and has shown us the way. I would encourage you to use this book, not only to enhance your own life, but also as a tool for impacting the world. -- Jennifer L.
