In Son of Satan, James Scudder teaches traditional pre-millennial, pre-tribulation rapture eschatology. He starts each chapter with a fictionalized account from the viewpoint of Satan or the Antichrist. The book ends with an appendix telling how to be saved, study questions for each chapter, and notes. Scudder is the senior pastor of Quentin Road Bible Baptist Church, the president of Dayspring Bible College, the host of Victory in Grace, and the author of several books. He writes enthusiastically, even ebulliently, at times. There's no question that he loves his subject. Each chapter exhorts to godly living or witnessing and suggests prayers.
With that said, I found myself wondering why he wrote on this subject when so many books are available. With few exceptions, his views line up with and Scudder relies upon the current thoughts on the subject. He quotes other writers readily.
However, Scudder does take a few controversial positions, such as using numerology as a reason to believe the Rapture will occur soon and identifying the United States as Babylon to be destroyed in Revelation 18. He takes scripture, especially Old Testament scripture, out of context to support his positions, but in the same way others do it.
The name of the book comes from the first chapter, but it is less about the Antichrist than about general pre-millennial eschatology. Scudder takes the sub-title from chapter 8, "The Prosperity," but I found this misleading. He is dealing with the identity of Babylon in Revelation 18.
One pet peeve of mine is when he identifies the martyrs beneath the throne, tells of God's blessing on them, and then promises those blessings to those of us who very likely will not be martyred for the faith. Facing trials and temptations, such as illness or rush-hour traffic, is not the equivalent of being beheaded for the faith and discredits the real agony of martyrdom. -- Debbie W.
