A Tempered Faith: Rediscovering Hope in the Ashes of Loss

by Jennifer Sands

Review  |   Author Bio  |  Read an Excerpt

In A Tempered Faith, Rediscovering Hope in the Ashes of Loss, Jennifer Sands shares a gut-wrenching story of her loss of her husband on the tragic day of 9/11. Jennifer, a pharmacist, and Jim, a strategic development engineer at Canter Fitzgerald on the 103rd floor of the World Trade Center, had a love relationship. In her loss, Jennifer found herself first in disbelief then angry at God for allowing Jim to be taken away from her. Depressed and deep in her aloneness, she turned to God’s Word in order to understand it all.

Jennifer shares, “Most people don’t truly analyze their relationship with God until it appears that God has failed them. Tragedies are a fork in the road of faith: tragic events will either make you turn your back on God and abandon faith – or they will bring you closer to Him.” In this case, it eventually brought her closer. Her “crutches,” as she refers to them, were family, friends, and faith. She also learned just how important it is to have something to look forward to: dedication events to Jim, writing, and God’s plan for her life.

I found tears in my eyes as Jennifer recounts events like the ones she refers to as “reality bricks,” those that fall and remind her that it is the end of the life as she knows it. I was deeply touched by her frank sharing, as well as her story of hope. Read this book, share it, and remember it. – Debra S. Murphy, Christian Book

Book Jacket:

God answers prayers. Jennifer Sands believed that. When she prayed for professional advancement, she got it. When she prayed for a mortgage approval, she got it. When she prayed that her terminally ill brother be allowed to live, he did. When she prayed that her husband, Jim, return home safely from work, he always did.

Except once.

On September 11, 2001 Jim Sands was killed in the collapse of the World Trade Center. On that day Jennifer's world imploded, and she suffered the first blows of a pounding spiritual firestorm that threatened to poison her faith and suffocate her relationship with God.

Why would God answer her prayers for Jim's safety this way? Why would God send Jim to her as a soul mate only to rip him from her heart in the prime of his life? Had God stopped listening? Had He stopped caring? Had they done something wrong to deserve this?

If there really was a God, how could He let this happen??
