Big Book of History

Master Books, a division of New Leaf Publishing Group, with the help of Laura Welch, Bodie Hodge, and Ken Ham from Answers in Genesis, has produced a colorful, mind-exploding timeline book. Big Book of History is a 15-foot, fold-out timeline that covers creation to modern computers. Using four different colored timelines to make distinctions between Biblical/Christian history (yellow), world events (orange), inventions/technology (green), and civilizations/empires (red), Big Book of History connects these varied subjects into a cohesive overview of God’s drama.

As each page is unfolded, the many photos, cartoons, and drawings compete to be examined first, but read the explanations in chronological order to take full advantage of this creative history lesson. Want to know when the first flush toilet was invented and by whom? Did you know that Shem, Noah’s son, could have told Isaac about the flood personally? In 1980, which country, that starts with the letter “Z”, was finally free of being ruled by another country? All these plus a ‘zillion’ more can be answered in the Big Book of History.

This book is not only a great book for homeschoolers but also an entertaining coffee table book. Learning the dates when civilizations were formed and by which of Noah’s sons they descended from, one can easily assemble history’s puzzle. Almost every event on the timelines has a photo to complete the picture.

Contrary to main stream beliefs on man that he started out as a dumb, ape-like beast grunting out monosyllabic commands, Big Book of History shows that man started out complex, intelligent, and inventive. Megalithic structures, large shipbuilding and ocean travel, gold jewelry, and civilizations with written laws all occurred before 1760 B.C. However, Big Book also shows our decline: prayer removed from U.S. schools in 1962; Bible removed from US schools in 1963; the Ten Commandments removed from US schools in 2005; and President Barack Obama declared the US is no longer a Christian nation in 2010.

This book can be used as a quick-reference book or a mesmerizing long, deep study into history. Elementary age to adults can glean interesting tidbits on our past from Big Book of History. Most timelines are put up on walls, but this 15-foot, colorful walk through history folds up nicely into a hard-bound book. – Dena Galang,
