Review:

Getting Through the Tough Stuff reminded this reviewer of Psalm 23, verse 4: “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me…” That’s essentially the theme of this book. While it is filled with hope and encouragement, the author never trivializes the problems that Christians are encountering. The tough stuff is tough. Yet, the chapters in this book walk readers through the dark times with the Light of the world at their side.

Author Charles R. Swindoll’s words beautifully come alive with the presence and the power of Jesus. Although the world in which we live is filled with different kinds of painful situations that are designed to hurt and break our hearts and spirits, we have Someone who is willing to help. The message is so simple, yet sometimes so hard to see when there are tears in our eyes. The shepherd’s heart of the author gently calls to the sheep, urging them to follow Jesus in perfect confidence and faith.

The fourteen chapters cover a variety of topics including temptation, doubt, remarriage, and confrontation. Written with the classic, straightforward style of this much-loved author, readers will feel they are listening to a friend who truly cares and wants the best for them.

The author carefully selects passages from the life and ministry of Jesus to remind readers of the “tough stuff” the Lord endured and triumphed over. These short lessons in spiritual history will inspire confidence, as well as provide consolation for present-day situations.

Dr. Swindoll is gifted at applying Scripture to real-life circumstances. He has shown once again that the Word is alive and applicable in today’s world. This book is guaranteed to speak to everyone on some level and in some way. In this life we will have tribulation, and the author acknowledges that fact, while encouraging us to hold fast to our faith.

This book closes with one of the most touching conclusions this reviewer has ever read. Dr. Swindoll recounts a story that is intended to sum up his thoughts. This illustration sweetly speaks of the deep love the Father has for us. The images left in the reader’s mind will surely help quench all doubt and fear, and renew a childlike spirit of hope and trust.

Getting Through the Tough Stuff is a lot easier with an author like Charles R. Swindoll, who has his mind filled with Scripture and his heart filled with love for God’s people. -- Joyce Handzo, Christian Book Previews.com
