Left Behind fans, and there's enough of you to make author Jerry Jenkins the number one novelist in the world, will be pleased with this addition to the popular series.

In Star Wars fashion, The Rising is the prequel to the 12-book Left Behind series. The novel parallels the story of antichrist Nicolae Carpathia's birth and childhood on one side of the globe, with the early years of Rayford Steele on the opposite side of the world. While many memorable characters come and go throughout the series, Carpathia and Steele appear from the first book to the last.

Jenkins paints Steele as a prideful, self-centered individual from childhood. "From her shoes to her socks to her jeans to her tops, hair, nose, makeup, everything – here was a girl who apparently invested in me-time," Jenkins describes Katherine-call-me-Kitty, the prequel to Rayford's Irene.

As readers would expect, Carpathia's entrance onto the planet is the result of complex plotting by ruthless people. The resulting child costs many lives. Brilliant but heartless, even as a child Carpathia has loyalty or affection for no one, not even the natural bond a child experiences with his mother.

While the subject matter in Jenkins' last book, Glorious Appearing, is unequaled, that book was the easiest in the series to put down during the reading process. Jenkins is back in stride with The Rising and readers will keep turning pages. -- PeggySue Wells, Christian Book
