Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus

by Wayne Stiles

Review  |   Author Bio  |  Read an Excerpt

Wayne Stiles’ Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus is the ideal nonfiction travelogue, capturing powerful modern locales and weaving in biblical scenes from both the Old and New Testament. The book takes the reader on a journey through the land of Israel, allowing the reader to see into a culture very different from his or her own. There is one common thread, however, and that is Jesus Christ.

Visit the towns where Jesus stayed, such as Bethlehem, Nazareth, and Jerusalem. See the well at which Jesus spoke to the Samaritan woman. Take a boat trip across the Sea of Galilee where Jesus walked on the water. Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus incorporates the four Gospels and makes applications to our lives today. The book encourages the reader to follow Jesus wholeheartedly as Jesus told Simon Peter and Andrew in Matthew 4:19 (NIV). “‘Come, follow me,’ Jesus said, ‘and I will make you fishers of men.’”

Stiles paints picturesque scenes throughout his book, making it seem as though the reader is walking next to him as he’s walking along the Western Wall or through a replica of the Old Testament Tabernacle. The background and history the book provides proves that Stiles did his research, but he is sure not to overwhelm the reader with lengthy, scholarly paragraphs. He works in humor skillfully and tactfully, most of it relating to cultural differences between East and West.

Stiles takes advantage of each page in order that Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus is not only a travelogue but also a devotional. Hundreds of Scripture references are used throughout, and they are indexed in the back of the book, as are geographical sites and biblical subjects. I would recommend this for anyone interested in traveling to the Holy Land. College-age adults would especially find this an interesting book, providing spiritual growth and academic insight. Every church library would benefit from having the book available to the congregation. – Caitlin Wilson,
