Os Hillman's second collection of devotions, TGIF: Today God Is First, is targeted at people in the workforce. It contains 365 one-page devotions, each dated for a specific day of the year. They are biblically accurate when they talk about scriptural matters, but the book seems to fall short on some levels.
I like a devotional to link biblical concepts with current world concerns, so when I found that each entry featured a Bible quote followed by a short exposition on the passage, I was disappointed. To me, it was more of a Bible study than a devotional, featuring a variety of themes and passages that seemed disjointed.
I felt this book would have been better with organized sections related to the workforce, such as "Quality Service," "God Honoring Goals," "Being a Testimony at Work," and "Leading by Christian Example." Or perhaps some references to up-to-date stories to show how the Bible is still applicable in today's workplace.
If you are expecting a clever turn of phrase, a vibrant epiphany, or an insightful illustration you can take to work to share with a colleague, you won't find it here. Instead, you'll find some poignant, gracious, accurate explanations of various passages in the Bible. That's not a bad way to start one's day. -- Dr. Dennis E. Hensley, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com.
In 1997, Atlanta businessman Os Hillman began writing a daily e-mail devotional featuring 4-minute meditations on faith and work life. For men and women in the workplace, this was just what they needed: practical help in applying their faith to their work life; encouragement to live out their faith; empowerment to be more effective in their jobs; support to become powerful witnesses at work; and examples of others who experienced the presence of God at work. Now Hillman has written his second book of devotions. TGIF includes 365 all-new daily meditations, plus a bonus topical index to find devotions that relate to specific topics such as motives, handling disappointments, adversity, integrity, finances, decision making and much more. Whether for individual quiet times, Bible study groups or workplace groups, these daily devotions will help men and women fulfill God's call on their lives in the workplace.
