Selah, by Nancie Carmichael, is a book geared toward women going through changes—or the change of life. An empty nester, Carmichael offers suggestions and ideas to help women evaluate where they are and where they are headed next.
Using biblical vignettes, fictionalized, and the input of friends, Carmichael writes to everywoman. Each chapter ends with a prayer and questions for reflection and further study. The wife of a pastor, author of many books, and mother of five grown children, Carmichael speaks from experience.
Meaningful quotes and poems are interspersed throughout the book, which help deepen the material. Carmichael’s assertions are founded largely on personal experience and as such, her appeal as a speaker and writer may lend influence to her arguments.
This book is easily digestible and sometimes wearisome in its lack of substance. If you are in search of great depths of insight, this is not necessarily the resource you need. If you are looking for a book to pass the time, study with a group of women who want to delve but not intrude into each other’s lives, this might be the book for you. Particularly if you no longer have children under foot, this book could help plot your next steps. -- Suzanne Rae Deshchidn, Christian Book Previews.com
"Selah provides excellent nourishment for the soul, or, in Nancie's words, 'food for our faith.' Women will connect at every turn of the page with her spiritual and practical help." -- Jill Briscoe, speaker, author, director of Telling the Truth Ministries Media, executive editor Just Between Us magazine
