Review:

Donna Jonesís book Taming Your Family Zoo is a parenting book that recommends taking a six week journey to training your monkeys, that is, your children into joys to encounter.

Part I presents the ever present problem of child rearing: how best to accomplish it in todayís society and with todayís new standards and unwritten rules. Jones deals with the parents, and the adjustments they may need to make in order to be successful in the six week program, like setting a good example, being consistent, and being in agreement with fellow caregivers. It is the motivational section.

Part II begins with the training weeks: week one covers general manners, such as handing otherís property, personal hygiene, speaking politely, behavior in public places; week two is on meeting and greeting; week three is on table manners; week four presents telephone and computer manners; week five gives party and outing manners; and week six is friendship manners. There is also a summary chapter and a question and answer section.

Donna Jones holds a degree in interpersonal communications from UCLA and is the co-founder and owner of Confidence and Courtesies, an etiquette course for children. She has been teaching children and teens manners since 1988, and also speaks at MOPS and womenís retreats.

The layout of the book is simple and clear. This would make a good study for parenting or moms group. The book does not attempt to cover discipline as much as what etiquette is needed and how that can be taught. I would recommend it to mothers who want to know just what rules to teach and how to approach the subject without nagging. Ė Elece Hollis, Christian Book Previews.com
