Chantel Hobbs does not believe in shortcuts, at least not when it comes to losing weight. And while her book, Walk Strong, Look Up, may seem like a course on an easy and relaxed weight loss method, Hobbs’ methods are anything but simple and easy.
The fitness coach makes readers work out both their bodies and their minds. Hobbs does not even begin to cover the steps to her walking exercise method without first taking several chapters to talk about her own experience: what she learned and how readers can learn it, too. The first part of her book focuses on the “why” behind our decisions to lose weight.
Hobbs then spends a few chapters in Part 2 covering the actual exercises, then moving on to talk more about the spiritual side of losing weight, as well as some tips for healthy eating and explanations of how the body and calories work. Throughout Hobbs challenges her readers to take the hard road, the road to a permanent solution for weight loss. Although some of her guidelines for the walks may be challenging, especially for those with wandering minds and short attention spans, they will help those willing to give full effort establish a routine.
Routine walks provide peaceful times for reflection and easing of stress, and they are wonderful opportunities for spiritual growth, Hobbs writes. Integrating exercise and spiritual discipline helps believers to “present [their] bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God” (Romans 12:1). Hobbs’ thought-provoking insights and practical advice force readers to at least consider getting past their objections to exercise. Anyone willing or dedicated will find Hobbs’ writing the motivating factor that leads them to Walk Strong, Look Up. – Harmony Wheeler, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com
