Ellie Lofaro’s Leap of Faith encourages readers “to place their trust solely in God.” Lofaro’s influential circle of friends and access to many women nationwide serve as the platform for her stories.
Lofaro is a Bible teacher, conference speaker, writer and “suburban housewife.” Her book is broken down into four indistinguishable parts culminating in a photo album where we can see the author with James Dobson, Chuck Colson, Kathy Tricolli, her mom, her family, and her with fresh cannolis.
The author states, “The leap of faith is not over a canyon or into a fire. It does not necessitate a mindless transference of my logic or my trust into the unknown.” Then proceeds to tell us she has known neither tragedy, nor been intimately acquainted with grief, she conveys the stories of those she has encountered at conferences and in life offering the reader day-old bread. In a passage titled, “more than a casserole,” Lafaro tells of the shortcomings of a relative and how said relative could have done better. This kind of teaching leaves one uncertain of the author’s motivation.
For those in need of a lifeline from God, this book may have a few stories to inspire, such as that of Alexander and the son who was saved in the ocean, but mostly it is one woman retelling someone else’s stories. Much is lost in translation. The author details her “more than wonderful journey” amidst the stories of the trials of others. It is tragic at best and insensitive at worst. I do not recommend this book as it is currently devoid of any significant message. -- Suzanne Rae Deshchidn, Christian Book Previews.com
