The Prodigal is the third book written by Beverly Lewis in the bestseller series Abram’s Daughters. As the story unwinds, we witness the struggles and deceptions of the main characters involved. Some of these characters include Sadie, who is keeping a life-changing letter from her sister Leah; Doctor Schwartz who for years has covered up his own deceptive secret; and Sadie, who struggles with making her true identity known to her newfound son.
Living next door to the Amish community, I can testify that Lewis admirably captures the day-to-day existence of these unadorned people. Their simple lifestyle may seem strange to us, and at times borders on "white witchcraft," yet their hardworking helpfulness to each other and community existence can be qualities admired by us "Englishers." Lewis’s research is quite evident as she explains terms such as the practice of "shunning," "hexedokder," and "rumschpringe."
The only criticism of this book was keeping track of the characters. Once the middle was reached, all the characters did manage to fall into place and would not deter me from reading her next volume. Lewis unquestionably has a way of keeping readers intrigued for her next book in this series. Will Jonas and Leah finally get together? What will become of Sadie and her time of "proving" in her community? Will Lydiann ever know the mysterious family secret hidden from her? If so, how will this affect her relationship to Jake Mast? We will all simply have to wait for that next book to be written! – Becky Swymeler, Christian Book Previews.com

At its heart, The Prodigal, is a multi-layered mystery and a saga of love, a story of deceit and untangled webs, of disgrace and redemption, encompassed by the merciful threads that knit families together.
Never would this family, especially Leah, have expected the return of one more prodigal….
