One Heart at a Time: Inspirational Thoughts for Teachers is a wonderful new gift book for teachers, written by ďAmericaís teacher,Ē Vicki Caruana. Many teachers are discouraged by the fact that teaching did not turn out to be the fulfilling job they expected. Caruana points out how demanding and overwhelming the job of teaching is, and how teachers need Godís help to reach childrenís minds and hearts.
The author writes that teachers can daily renew their resolve to reach and teach, by allowing God to heal their own hearts through meditating on Godís words, praying, and letting the Holy Spirit open their eyes to each studentís particular needs.
The book is divided into sixty devotionals: five weekday readings and a weekend segment. Each consists of a scripture, thought, short story from a teacherís experiences, an action the teacher can take, and a prayer. This is a beautiful hardbound book full of encouragement that will enrich, energize, and enliven the teacherís work.
Vicki draws from her experiences as a public school teacher, homeschooling mom, and teacher educator. She has written three other books of devotionals for teachers, Apples of Gold for Teachers, Apples and Chalkdust and More Apples and Chalkdust.
I especially liked this book. It is unique in that it does not trivialize the job of teaching with crayon drawn ďkiddie art,Ē as if all teachers were kindergarten teachers. The devotionals are not generic, simplistic pieces written by someone who never taught, but in-depth and thoughtful writings in content and presentation. Like a home cooked meal after a diet of junk food, I found this book satisfying and refreshing. One Heart at a Time would make a treasured gift for any teacher. -- Elece Hollis, Christian Book Previews.com
