Hero Tales, Vol. 4

by Dave & Neta Jackson

Review  |   Author Bio  |  Read an Excerpt

Dave and Neta Jackson have done it again! They have given elementary-aged children and their families more Christian heroes to learn from and admire in Hero Tales Volume IV. They present a brief biographical sketch of fifteen heroes (some are couples), then have three short stories about each character. Each story ends with three short, thought-provoking questions that help the child understand the character quality being studied and how it applies to his life.

The heroes in this book include: Coach Ricky and Sherialyn Byrdsong; brain surgeon Ben Carson; missionary to Liberia, Eliza Davis George; Titanic hero John Harper; missionary to Australia, Samuel Leigh; C.S. Lewis; Native American "Moses," Samson Occam; missionary to South Sea Islands, John Paton; liberator of Hindu widows, Pandita Ramabai; Gospel Recordings founder, Joy Ridderhof; "Father" of the Pentecostal Church, William Seymour; Incan pastor, Rómulo Sauñe; martyrs John & Betty Stam; Voice of the Martyrs director, Tom White; British antislavery crusader, William Wilberforce.

The chapters teach different character traits ranging from advocacy to zeal. A list of the stories by character trait appears in the back of the book. Though not all of the stories end happily, they are uplifting. They teach not only about real heroes, but about real life and real Christian history, all of which kids need. They also teach about serving God in different walks of life with the talents God gives you.

I have used the first book in the series a little with my five-year-old daughter and hope to use it more as she gets older. The questions are too hard for her right now, but she likes the stories, and they stimulate conversations originating with her questions. Families will benefit from using these books for history or with Bible lessons while home schooling or during family devotions. They would be good in Christian schools, Sunday schools, and camp devotions.

The Jacksons have also written the historical fiction series for kids, the Trailblazer series and Neta is the author of the Yada Yada Prayer Group series. The Hero Tales I and IV receive a big bravo from me! – Debbie W. Wilson, Christian Book
