A Stitch in Time by Allison Bottke chronicles a modern-day, middle-aged woman in the process of learning a lesson in forgiveness and how to start life over. After thirty years of marriage, Dee Harris walks out on her unfaithful husband Lyle. Once on her own, Dee lives the life of a renewed creature with a new faith. The irony of it all is that Dee is moving on, but to keep moving on she must do the one thing she does not want to do--forgive Lyle.
Dee has a vibrant personality and she is surrounded by hordes of famous people, elegant fashions, and blockbuster films. Due to an accurate portrayal of the current artistic field, there is a homosexual character who appears briefly in the book. Although this character is present, homosexuality is not shown in either a positive or negative light.
Having a glamourous setting for A Stitch in Time does cause reality to get somewhat blurred. Dee’s problems are downplayed and her threatening difficulties vanish rather quickly. This lack of realism is nowhere more evident than in the last chapter, which is reminiscent of a fairytale ending from a movie script.
Though the story is not quite believable, and its theology is uncertain, it provides some enjoyable moments of entertainment now and then. – Kristi J. Meyers, Christian Book Previews.com
