Touchdown Alexander: My Story of Faith, Football, and Pursuing the Dream

by Shaun Alexander with Cecil Murphey

In every life, a little rain must fall, but apparently not for football superstar Shaun Alexander. His book, Touchdown Alexander, is a record of one impressive achievement after another. He has led, as he puts it, a blessed life.

At a glance, it seemed like Touchdown Alexander would be an interesting, inspirational story. Indeed, for some who read it, it may be so. Shaun Alexander’s life is an example of how truly good God can be to an individual. But for me, reading this book only emphasized exactly how different I am from Shaun Alexander. It read like a list of reasons why Shaun Alexander was “better” than most people, in that he is taller, stronger, faster, and more attractive than the average Joe on the street.

The writing style was okay, but a bit simplistic at points. The book often incorporated elements of sports slang that, while sounding fine in conversation, didn’t look good in print. The book itself, overall, was predictable too often. Personally, I’d rather read something about someone who struggled through great hardships and persevered than read a book about someone who had a comparably perfect life. After all, even gifted people like Shaun Alexander still have to put in many hours of physical conditioning, team practices, and personal disciplines. Those struggles needed to be emphasized more, I feel.

To be fair, Touchdown Alexander does talk about some of Shaun Alexander’s struggles, but they are few, and were easily overcome. For sports fans, this book is a great record of Shaun Alexander’s life, faith, and accomplishments, but as an inspirational story, it is not very motivational. – Peter Semple, Christian Book
