Do you enjoy reading your Bible each day? Are you learning new and exciting things every time you personally spend time in God’s Word? Would you like to become more like the Bereans of Acts 17:11 who “examined” or “searched out” the Scriptures every day to prove the truth of what they were being taught? If you want to do more than just read God’s Word, then Lord Teach Me to Study the Bible in 28 Days is a very good resource for you.
The author, Kay Arthur, and her husband are the founders of a ministry that tries to help believers study the Bible. She has written this book “to teach you how to study the Bible for yourself so you can discover truth for yourself” (pp. 13-14). In order to teach readers to be trained from the Bible, this book is broken down into 28 chapters, one for each day of the week for four weeks. As you progress through the book, you will spend time learning how to observe what is in the text. You will also spend time learning how to interpret and then apply the truth of that text to your own life.
This is a very user-friendly and hands-on book. Already in the first chapter, the reader begins to study the Bible with the text printed right there within the chapter. The author recommends working through this book with a set of colored pencils, highlighters, or markers so that you can identify key people, key places, key words, and key phrases. There are several questions printed in each chapter, along with plenty of space to do your work in the book. The questions are usually very easy to answer once you look carefully at the passage being studied. But some of the questions are more difficult, so it would have been helpful if the author had put a section at the end of the book that listed the answers. That way, new Bible students could be certain they were on the right track.
This book will teach you how to begin to study the Bible inductively. This means you will go to the text of God’s Word first and spend time reading, re-reading, highlighting, and writing things down from the text. Then, after you have spent time in the Word of God, you are directed to use other resources to help you study even more. The advantage of this approach is that you do not have to rely on what others say about the Bible. You see the truths directly from God’s Word for yourself.
This book could very powerfully enrich your personal devotional life, teaching you to do more than just read your Bible. You are guided toward “thinking and actively listening; not adding to the text what we imagine would happen, but with great reverence, carefully and accurately observing what God has said, picturing it, meditating on it” so that you might know the truth and become more Christ-like as you apply that truth to your own life (pg. 72).
Lord Teach Me to Study the Bible in 28 Days is definitely for those who want to begin to learn how to study the Bible. Once you have understood the basics, Arthur’s other books, such as How to Study Your Bible, will help you refine your observation, interpretation and application skills. – James Billings, Christian Book Previews.com
