“The tenacious investigator, Callie Webber, is back to solve another mystery in A Quarter for a Kiss by Mindy Starns Clark, alongside her boss-cum-boyfriend Tom Bennett. After a sniper shoots Callie’s longtime mentor Eli, she finds herself following clues to the exotic island of St. John. In the process, she not only learns secrets from Eli’s past, but more importantly, Tom reveals more of himself and his mysterious activities that are only hinted at in Ms. Clark’s previous three novels.
“Callie is a non-profit investigator whose job it is to approve organizations for Tom’s generous endowments. Up to now, Tom and Callie’s relationship has consisted of lengthy phone calls and brief encounters. In A Quarter for a Kiss, they are finally kept together in an effort to find Eli’s shooter. Respecting Christian morals, the pair are not overly amorous, but neither are they very romantic. Possibly because her character is very intelligent and capable, I find Callie a bit cold and devoid of most natural emotions. I want to like her more, but we aren’t let into the feelings she must be experiencing as she struggles with being a widow, loving again, and possibly losing a life-long friend. In this fourth installment the reader gets to know Tom better, and his is more vulnerable and thus, more endearing.
“A Quarter for a Kiss effortlessly draws the reader into its dangers and duplicity, and leaves us wanting more of this sleuthing duo. The peripheral characters are well-rounded and engaging, and my hope is that Ms. Clark opens up the heroine’s personality to the her many fans of the Million Dollar Mysteries series. Anyone who craves a fast-paced mystery with a strong female lead will find satisfaction in A Quarter for a Kiss.” – Stacy Oliver, Christian Book Previews.com
“Engrossing and perfectly–plotted, A Quarter for a Kiss is a must–read for the mystery lover. This is an excellent fourth tale in Mindy Starns Clark’s ‘Million Dollar Mystery’ series.” — Romantic Times Magazine
It’s April, spring is in the air, and Callie and Tom have just spent a wonderful few weeks getting to know each another after years of a telephone–only relationship. But as their time together draws to a close, they are called to the hospital bed of mutual friend Eli Gold, who has just been shot.
Eli asks Callie to find out who is responsible for the shooting and begs Tom to help her. The search leads Tom and Callie to the beautiful island of St. John in the Virgin Islands. There they face a sinister enemy among the ruins of an old sugar plantation—an enemy who’s willing to do anything to keep his identity secret and the past deeply buried.
