The Light of the World

by Katherine Paterson

Review  |   Author Bio  |  Read an Excerpt

What a wonderful book The Light of the World by Katherine Paterson is! The illustrations on every other page are full of meaning and deep, rich color, just like paintings one would find in a museum. Beautiful! The text on the opposite page from each picture is also wonderful, explaining different excerpts from the life of Christ. Many parts of Jesus' life are written about, in a language children can understand and, yet, still sounding very close to what the Bible actually says. There is the story of His birth as well as the parables He taught, the miracles He performed, the calling of the disciples, the death of Christ, His resurrection, and His light that continues to shine through believers. Having very young children, I especially appreciate the way the author and illustrator handled the death of Christ. The truth was told, but the potentially scary part of crucifixion was not portrayed - either graphically or in the written text. I cannot wait to share this amazing book with my children. It's quite different from any other children's Bibles or Bible stories we've looked at or read through - different in a very good way! -- Jennifer Joneleit,

Book Jacket:

"When the people looked at all the sadness and evil in the world, they had trouble believing that God was in charge. 'God's kingdom,' said Jesus, 'is as tiny as the smallest of seeds, but when it is planted it grows into such a huge tree that the birds make their nests in its branches.'"

Newbery Medalist & minister's wife Katherine Paterson retells the life of Jesus in simple, beautiful language for all ages, making the story new again through her trademark generosity and compassion. Iconic images from Jesus's life light the text with the same warmth and directness. A perfect gift book!
