Carla Stewart’s Broken Wings is a moving story of healing and starting anew. Brooke Woodson is engaged to Lance, the future district attorney of Tulsa. Everything is perfect until Lance’s temper flares, putting Brooke in the hospital twice. During her hospital stays, Brooke meets Mitzi Steiner. As Brooke struggles to rid herself of Lance’s jealous rage, she forms a relationship with Mitzi. Through Mitzi’s testimony, Brooke gains the confidence to move on with her life and mend her broken wings.
Stewart narrates Broken Wings from both Mitzi and Brooke’s points of view, giving the reader more insight into why Mitzi is helping Brooke and a more intimate look at Brooke’s struggles. Mitzi and Brooke’s relationship forms very unconventionally yet is believable from the moment they meet. As the story progresses, they grow closer and become dependent on each other, especially when Lance stalks Brooke, and Mitzi has a wreck on the highway. All the characters are seamlessly blended into the storyline and keep the story moving.
Brooke’s struggles go further than trying to escape Lance. She has always done what people thought was best and is unhappy as a result. On top of that, no one believes that Lance would lay a finger on her, which puts her job and family relationships in jeopardy. She is lost, confused, and without the support of her family. Brooke’s character keeps the reader rooting for her to succeed and to pursue her dreams.
Brooke is not the only character struggling. Mitzi’s husband Gabe is in a care center for Alzheimer’s patients. She visits him daily, but she still misses his knowledgeable presence in her life. Even with these struggles, which are complicated by a traumatizing past, Mitzi’s still feisty, independent, and, above all, giving. Mitzi tells her thrilling and scarred life story, of how she came to live in Tulsa and perform in a famous jazz duet with Gabe. Through Mitizi’s testimony, Brooke gains a sense of who she is and sees that, just as in Romans 8:28, God will work wonders for those who love him.
Broken Wings is an uplifting book that I have already recommended to friends of all ages. The characters are dynamic, and Stewart keeps the reader engaged. All situations in this book are applicable to any woman, of any age, in any life circumstance. – Kailey Traylor, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com
