The Children of God Storybook Bible Deluxe Edition

by Archbishop Desmond Tutu

Review:

The Children of God Storybook Bible Deluxe Edition by Desmond Tutu seems concerned with being politically correct and all-inclusive, it takes some liberties with stories and lessons from the Bible. For example, in the section titled, "Jesus Blesses the Little Children" based on Mark 10, the drawings of the children coming to sit on the lap of Jesus are of youngsters who are East Indian, Chinese, African, Caucasian, and Hispanic. That's not true of the Bible version of the story in which all of the children were Jewish.

Despite this, the book does an impressive job of exposing young readers to most of the key stories of the Bible, including the Garden of Eden, Noah's ark, Moses and the burning bush, David versus Goliath, Daniel in the lions' den, Esther saving the Jews, Jonah and the big fish, the virgin birth of Jesus, the wise men, the parables, the plan of salvation, the last supper, the trial and crucifixion of Jesus, the resurrection, and the calling of the apostle Paul.

Some of the artwork, such as the scene of Christ on the cross, is very sophisticated and profound, whereas other stories feature bright-colored cartoon settings and character drawings. The stories are truncated and extremely succinct, providing an adequate summary and a direct application of the moral or lesson provided by the narrative. Below each picture is a brief child's prayer, such as, "Dear God, fill me with love," or "Dear God, thank you for your Son Jesus." As a supplement to the visual book, there are two audio CDs which provide a reading of the entire 56 chapters of the book. Archbishop Tutu received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009. Ė Dr. Dennis E. Hensley, www.ChristianBookPreviews.com
